Grammar Giveaway & Review

I was contacted by Reader's Digest to review some of their educational materials and I was given extra copies to giveaway on here!

This is quite an honor.  Ever since I was a child, my parents have subscribed to Reader's Digest and often bought their books.  We have always associated Reader's Digest with good, quality material.

The grammar book I am reviewing is

This book would be great for an unschooler.
It is the perfect kind of book to just leave laying around for your kids to pick up and browse through.
It takes the hard and fast rules of grammar and puts them in easy to digest chunks.
You could literally open this book, skim a page and learn something.

This book goes through spelling in the English language,
homonyms and homophones,
prefixes, suffixes,
capitalization,
parts of speech,
sentence structure,
punctuation,
and elements of style.

It would be a fabulous addition to a Writer's Workshop approach to writing, as you could just focus on one section, read it to your class or summarize it and have them look for those things in their own writing.

I find that with my girls, sitting on the couch reading a book like this together actually cements the information in their brains better than kill & drill exercises.

The girls and I did this on several occasions with their free-writing journals and found we got a lot out of it -- glad I get to keep a copy of this book ;-)

My favorite part of this book are these little Smart-Aleck boxes,
which are filled with interesting facts.
