Metamorphosis

My favorite resource this week was our caterpillar/butterfly kit.

Metamorphosis is the new favorite word in our family.
We all find ourselves using it often.
I feel sometimes like we are going through our own metamorphosis since we began homeschooling!

We are using Real Science 4 Kids Biology.
I have to say, we are LOVING this program!

Chapter 8 is about caterpillars changing to butterflies,
but we decided to skip ahead in hopes that we can release these butterflies.
Although it will more than likely be too cold for that.
But we had high hopes.
And we are still enjoying this experience.

We did this once before, when the girls were little.

Our larvae arrived on Monday, September 12.

This is what they looked like when they arrived:

September 18, 2011
The chrysalids have formed.

September 19, 2011
We had Daddy transfer the paper on top of the cup to the habitat.
(Mommy was too squeamish for the task!)

When we took the lid off the cup, I did think it was interesting that they had made holes in the paper.

Chrysalids

September 25 - first butterfly hatches and we watch it stumble around, it needs to hang upside down to get fluid in its wings (we learned this from our science book!)

September 26 - another butterfly hatches and we watch him stumble around.

September 27 -ALL of our butterflies are hatched!

We had hoped to release them when my brother, sister in law and niece came last weekend, but it was cold that day.  Fortunately the weather was accurately predicted to be warm all of this past week.

October 3 - The Release!

They happily climbed on the girls' fingers!

They kept landing on the girls!

the photos of them in flight were not great,
but we enjoyed watching them explore.
they definitely seemed very happy to be free!
