Vacation, Holiday, Get Away!

I love lazy Sundays.  Today we are planning our summer vacation.

A few years ago, my husband and I went to Jamaica for our tenth wedding anniversary.  We went alone, without the girls.  At the time, we didn't realize it would be such a big deal to them.  But it was.  They were devastated that we had left them and very upset all week.  I promised not to do that to them again.  But, Jason and I are itching to go back...

We have considered taking the girls on a Caribbean vacation.  But the things that we enjoyed: snorkeling and fine dining and drinking rum drinks and laying on the beach reading, are not things that appeal to an 8 and 10 year old.  At least not to ours.  They would NEVER jump off a boat into open water.  They will try different foods, but they prefer chicken nuggets.  Obviously they can't drink rum and laying on the beach would be something that would be okay for about twenty minutes.

We tried cruising and it was not for us.  We like more time on an island, immersing ourselves in the culture, developing relationships with the natives.  Jason loves plant life and in Jamaica he would wander the resort and beyond, studying the plant life and taking photographs.  He found he didn't have as much time for that and was disappointed.  I like to explore and see things, but I also like a lot of alone time and being relatively alone on a beach with a book and an umbrella drink is PURE HEAVEN for me, being on a crowded cruise ship with noisy people did not cut it.

A learned about Hershey Park in school and wanted to go there.  We considered doing a night or two there, but we are close enough that we could easily do it in a day.

My parents have a house on a lake in upstate NY and we always spend several weekends and usually a week there, but we wanted something different this year...

We sat around this morning talking about ideas and came up with a vacation that we are all REALLY excited about!  The girls have gotten very involved in the planning and decision making.  I am very excited...now just to pick a week!
