Separating Liquids

The girls have been doing science experiments at co-op and since we are new to the homeschooling thing, I have been a little lax in the science area.  But this weekend, while I was in reunion mode, Jason and the girls experimented with making liquids float.

They used food color, 1/2 cup corn syrup, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup liquid bleach and a clear plastic bottle.

First, they mixed red food coloring with the corn syrup.
They poured that in the bottle.

Then they poured the vegetable oil in on top of the corn syrup.

Then they mixed blue food color with water and poured that in... They talked about what they thought would happen.  A and P both thought the oil would be heavier and stay below the water.

But....the water sank below the oil!
Then they poured the bleach in...
They all predicted that the bleach would wipe out the food color.
Jason asked them what happened to the blue water and where the bleach ended up and why they thought that happened.

THEN....they shook it all up....
